Duende Beat: Reading and Writing with Bob Kaufman

A poetics workshop like no other. Experience the poetry of a single author— in community with other writers— and write in response together.

A multi-week writing workshop on the poetry of Bob Kaufman.

Expect to generate many poems. 

Hoa Nguyen and Kristin Prevallet collaborate and bring their radical poetic & pedagogical lineages to this deep immersion into the poetry of Bob Kaufman, one of America’s most luminous, unrecognized literary geniuses.

Meeting across multiple Sundays, this course will call us into sound as we alternate reading out loud with writing into the sonic frequency of Kaufman’s language and his relationship to Lorca’s duende, the Beat-era, and cante moro. 

Receive weekly written materials that give form to insights and offer avenues into creativity. These include inventive writing prompts, contextualizing commentary, critical essays, interviews, links for further reading, revision tools, images, and sound files.

This is a full experience.

Format

This is a 2-hour workshop: we read together for the first hour and in the second hour we write independently. Meeting for 4 to 6 sessions, it completes with a celebration of poetry.*
